Top Ten Fantasy: Issue 4

The Draft can shake things up. Changes are in bold.

Quarterback
1. Peyton Manning - Peyton is easily the best. He's not on Madden '08, and the Colts got him a great slot receiver in Anthony Gonzolez.
2. Drew Brees - I wish I could make Brees 1A, as he will now throw to speedy Tennessee Alum Robert Meachem.
3. Tom Brady (Previously 4) - Randy Moss! He's throwing to Randy F-ing Moss! He had a good year with Brown, Gaffeny, and Caldwell, he'll do unbelievable things with Moss, Stallworth, and Washington.
4. Carson Palmer (Previously 3) - Brady's electrified recieving corps knocks Palmer down a peg.
5. Donovan McNabb (Previously 6) - Andy Reid has said McNabb is 'ahead of schedule' and has 'no need to worry' about Kolb being Philadelphia's first pick. You wouldn't lie to us, would you, Andy?
6. Marc Bulger (Previously 7) - Rutgers Fullback Brian Leonard will provide nice pass protection that will complement the Rams explosive offense.
7. Michael Vick (Previously 5) - I love rushing quarterbacks, they get you those few precious points in tight contests, but Vick can't seem to get away from trouble. Bulger and McNabb have better weapons anyway.
8. Matt Leinhart - Arizona fans rejoice! The drafting of Penn State Tackle Levi Brown to protect Leinhart's blind side almost made me put him above vick. Get ready for a very productive year from number seven.
9. Ben Roethlisberger (Previously 10) - It KILLS me that Dwayne Jarrett was taken right before the Steeler's second round pick. I think Big Ben Roethlisberger has something to prove this year, and word on the street is third rounder TE Spaeth has solid hands.
10. Philip Rivers (Previously Unranked) - Rivers now has a weapon out of LSU in Craig, and developed great rapport with Antonio Gates towards the end of last season. They have offensive minded coach Norv Turner at the helm. You can bet they'll score some serious point-age.

Late Round Flier Special: Jon Kitna - I know this seems like a really weird pick, but it makes sense once you think about it. Kitna, who threw for over 4,000 yards last year, has Calvin "The Next Jerry Rice" Johnson to throw to in addition to Mike Furrey and Roy Williams. And you know the Lions will be playing from behind often.

Dropped Out: Vince Young - I feel bad for Titans fans. Their Rookie Of The Year QB gets the cover of Madden (almost guaranteeing a down year) and Tennessee fails to draft a major recieving threat.

Running Back
1. LaDanian Tomlinson - Is there a rank higher than one? Because there is now a #1 recieving threat in San Diego.
2. Steven Jackson (Previously 3) - He now has Leonard to open huge holes to run through.
3. Larry Johnson (Previously 2) - Another stalwart of the KC line just retired, and LJ's on the trading block. Love the guy as a runner, but he doesn't deserve #2.
4. Brian Westbrook (Previously 5) - Tony Hunt was a great pick. I love it. No more Westbrook fumbles in the fourth quarter, and the Philly Halfback will take alot less of a beating with a bruiser to spell him.
5. Frank Gore (Previously 4) - Gore should do well this year, but Norv Turner's departure isn't good. The D-Jax acquisition does help him. Think of him as a safer pick now.
6. Rudi Johnson - Cincy picked up Kenney Irons, but this won't threaten Johnson's workload as much as you'd think.
7. Willie Parker - I like the idea of moving to more multiple tight end sets. This means better blocking for FWP.
8. Shaun Alexander - I can't like the fact that the best reciever the Seahawks had was traded. There is alot more pressure on Alexander now.
9. Willis McGahee - The Ravens did the smart thing and drafted a few OL's this weekend. McGahee should bloom this season.
10. Maurice Jones-Drew - He can post eye-popping yardage totals, and that's that.

Late Round Flier Special - Michael Bush - Yes, he is playing in Oakland, where they won't have alot of time to hold on to the ball, but he has been called 'The Steal of the Draft' and 'A future star'. Perfect MJD candidate for this year.

Wide Reciever
1. Marvin Harrison - He can only benefit with Gonzolez on the field. Really.
2. Chad Johnson - Chris Henry got suspended, and Chad can go back to scoring TD's.
3. Larry Fitzgerald - Fitzgerald should be #1c if he stays healthy.
4. Steve Smith - With Dwayne Jarrett on the roster, you have to believe that Smith will have less defenders to deal with. We can only hope.
5. Reggie Wayne - Peyton didn't get Madden '08, so Reggie's production will be great.
6. Terrell Owens - T.O. is getting his Bonus. A paid T.O. is a happy T.O.
7. Javon Walker - Jay Cutler is coming into his own, and Walker will reap the benefits.
8. Roy Williams - You have to wonder if opposing defenses will dare to double cover Williams while Calvin Johnson is on the field.
9. Anquan Boldin - The drafting of Levi Brown makes Arizona's offensive stock soar.
10. T.J. Houshmanzadeh - Again, Chris Henry won't be around for half the season, and I can only be elated by that.

Late Round Flier Special - Calvin Johnson - If CJ even lasts until the late rounds of your draft, you have to take him. He is a number three WR candidate based simply on the fact he has been called "uncoverable".

Mark's Mock (Picks 17-32)

Here's Part two - remember, this is what i'd LIKE to happen, not what will.

17. Jaguars - Brandon Merriweather - Jax will ignore character issues and take the Miami standout at their own risk to compensate for the loss of Grant.

18. Bengals - Darelle Revis - Pittsburgh is more likely to take the hometown cornerback, but if he is somehow passed up for Poz (I can only hope) instead, Cincy will take him in an instant.

19. Titans - Ted Ginn Jr. - Even though he is an injury concern, I'd love for Young to have a speedy weapon like Ginn in Tennessee.

20. Giants - Lawrence Timmons - The Giants don't have any linebackers, do they?

21. Broncos - Jamaal Anderson - One slight move in a draft can completely change a player's stock. Anderson would be a steal for Denver here, who needs help at DE.

22. Cowboys - Dwyane Jarret - I really don't know who else to put here.

23. Chiefs - Robert Meachem - For LJ's sake, the Chiefs have to get a threat downfield. Huard can have another great season if he is properly equipped with this Tennessee standout.

24. Patriots (from Seahawks deal for Deon Branch) - Jon Beason - The Pats take Beason a little earlier than they'd like to as LBs are flying off the board.

25. Jets - Chris Houston - New York needs help in the secondary and will get it with Houston.

26. Eagles - Aaron Ross - The Birds love D-Linemen in the first round, but they have so many losses at secondary they almost have to take the Texas standout.

27. Saints - Jarvis Moss - New Orleans takes Moss in 'Best Player Available' mode, and hopes that conerback depth will be their ally.

28. Patriots - Anthony Spencer - With a deep draft for Wide Receivers, the Patriots stay defensive.

29. Ravens - Justin Blalock - Baltimore needs a young quarterback, but no one is worth taking this early. Here's to patching up the line.

30. Chargers - Dwayne Bowe - Like the Chiefs, they need a reciever to complement their great running back.

31. Bears - LaMarr Woodley - Chicago takes out Lance Briggs insurance.

32. Colts - Reggie Nelson - It's absurd to think Nelson will fall this far, but the Colts will take the best defensive player available.

Mark's Mock (Picks 1-16)

This is not necessarily what I think will happen tomorrow, but here's how I would like to see the first round go:

1. Raiders - JaMarcus Russell - Oakland needs to start with the foundation of a good team: a franchise quarterback. Russell is a physical freak and deserves to fill that role.

2. Buccaneers (Trade 1st round pick, 2nd round pick for Detroit's 1st) - Calvin Johnson - If Tampa snatches up this phenom, whoever is behind center will put on a great show. Think of what Bush did for the Saints.

3. Browns - Brady Quinn - As much as I hate the Steeler's chief rival getting such a quality signal caller, Quinn is the best fit.

4. Lions (Traded down) - Gaines Adams - Millen has to go defensive here, trading down will take off alot of pressure.

5. Cardinals - Adrian Peterson - I really really wanted my "third team" to take Joe Thomas here, but when I thought about it, I love the idea of this offense being even more potentially explosive. I'll say they take OL's in subsequent rounds if not Thomas here.

6. Dolphins (Traded 1st round spots with Washington) - Joe Thomas - Most have the 'phins taking Levi Brown at nine, but most teams (Arizona not included) consider Thomas to be the better tackle. I could see them skipping ahead three spots via the second-pick desperate Redskins.

7. Vikings - LaRon Landry - Much to the Falcon's dismay, the player hailed as "The Next Ed Reed" won't last past seven. Childress is an offensive-minded coach, but there isn't an offensive player worth taking at seven on the board.

8. Falcons - Amobi Okoye - Okie (My nickname) will be scooped up by his college coach, and will likely be a force to be reckoned with by his third year. He's a good candidate for the fading falcons d.

9. Redskins (Traded with Miami) - Alan Branch - The washington brass might find Okoye too big of a risk to take at 6, so they take an arguably equitable DT at nine, and pick up a second round pick in the process.

10. Texans - Levi Brown - Matt Schaub has my vote of confidence, but only behind a retooled line. Let's hope the houston front office doesn't screw another draft up.

11. 49ers - Adam Carriker - There's no doubt SanFran will go defensive in the first round. They got Vernon Davis as a downfield threat last year, and will focus on giving QB smith weapons later. DE is a need, and with the two best DT's off the board, they will take Carriker.

12. Bills - Patrick Willis - Does Buffalo have ANY LB's on the roster? With Spikes and Fletcher gone, they will have big holes to fill fast.

13. Rams - Leon Hall - St. Louis' defense was terrible last year. The Secondary will welcome the Michigan corner with open arms. Nuff said.

14. Panthers - Greg Olsen - A little high? Maybe. But I'd like Carolina to realize they lost a key component in their offense when Kris Magnum retired. Olsen is the only TE worth drafting this high.

15. Steelers - Paul Posluszny - Remember this is what I WANT to happen, not what will. The possibility of Poz in black and gold heightens if a team is willing to trade up to 15. Tennesee maybe?

16. Packers - Marshawn Lynch - They have no other choice. With Ahman Green in houston, Farve is a sitting duck or interception machine unless they have a threat in the backfield.

WTF Am I Doing?

The Extended Hiatus will end on April 28th, the NFL Draft.

Joey, Joey, Joey...

The Rooney family can only feel vindicated after releasing OLB Joey Porter, who quickly signed with the Miami Dolphins. Porter, who was cut because he was due a large bonus and was a possible holdout threat for training camp, had a scuffle with Bengals player Levi Jones merely days after signing with his new team. Porter appparently did the right thing in telling the organization about the incident right after it happened, but new details, reported by Benmaller.com, put the linebacker in a different light;

"The fight between Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter and Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones at a Las Vegas casino earlier this month was about football -- but it no longer appears to have been the one-on-one scrap initially described by police. Instead, video surveillance revealed Porter punching Jones with a closed fist before other ''unidentified males'' also joined the attack on Porter's behalf, a report released by the Las Vegas Police Department said. Jones, who suffered a small cut above his eye in the fight, spoke publicly for the first time about the incident. On the Bengals' official website, the lineman called the incident ``a cowardly assault by a coward.'' ''One versus seven, six from behind,'' Jones told the website. 'The police report came out and told the truth. Joey Porter did not kick Levi Jones' [butt]. Basically what he did was walk up to me, get my attention talking trash while his boys jumped me from behind. ``They plotted the thing. He was shooting craps. I was playing blackjack. He saw me, there was no exchange before he just came up on me.''

Posted March 29, by Ben Maller"

Joey, Joey, Joey...it is truly discouraging to see one of the players I have loved watching in Black and Gold get involved in such activity. Player brawls are never good, but three things make this situation worse;

1) If you're going to fight a guy, whatever your problem with him may be, don't jump him with your friends. Not only does it reflect badly upon your strength and toughness, it completely dismisses any potential merit in the fight.

2) Honestly, who picks a VEGAS CASINO as a location to assault someone? Did Porters train of thought seriously go like "There's not any cameras in or around casinos, right?"

3) This is amid a flurry of press about NFL players misbehavior and how the league should crack down. The commissioner is less than a month away from completing his overhaul on the disciplinary policies, and Joey Porter's lack of control over his anger throws him in the category of more notorious wrongdoers like Chris Henry, Tank Johnson, and Pacman Jones. What timing.

Personally, I thought Joey Porter was professional enough to maintain a good reputation, especially in the first stages of employment with a new team. No matter what his motivations were, his actions are dissapointing and reprehensible.

Takeo Me Out

If you listened closely this morning, a distand chorus of "ohhhhs" could be heard being uttered under the breath of football junkies everywhere.

When the Eagles signed DT Reagor on the roster, it didn't seem to make sense. Defensive Tackle wasn't the most pressing need on defense, the Linebacking Corps was. Plus, this was the team that drafted Broderick Bunkley right after Mike Patterson; why would they need another DT? Because the trade market is all about using excess to compensate for your needs.

The Reagor singing made Darwin Walker, who tended to only show flashes of greatness in Philly and was at best a rotational player, expendable. This worked out very well for the Buffalo Bills, who were looking to deal slightly disgruntled veteran LB Takeo Spikes.

The deal involved the Bills dealing both Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb (who will be the veteran influence on the QB roster) for Darwin Walker and a conditional 2008 pick. The conditional pick is based on whether Spikes (who has one year left on his contract) and the Eagles work out an extension.

You've got to hand it to the Eagles brass on this one, they're willing to take risks, but only very miniscule ones. They don't just give away draft picks - thanks to the conditional policy we didnt have to give up any for Donte Stallworth. Spikes will bolster the Linebacking corps immediately, and will give the Eagles more options in the draft. Chances are, Philly will take a raw Linebacking talent that will take a year or two to develop behind Spikes and Trotter, or focus on the secondary, which has been hit in free agency.

The only part of this deal I don't love is Holcomb. While it is good to have an 11-year player on the QB roster to offer his influence, I believe the Eagles should draft a young quarterback to groom for a few seasons very soon. McNabb is a great player - but given his injury history, the position becomes a bigger risk each draft the Birds pass up on a young buck to make their next franchise player.

Top Ten Fantasy: Issue 3

Though there aren't a ton of major changes (in bold) on the fantasy front, I'd like to keep this updated regularly.

Quarterback
1. Peyton Manning - I honestly don't see Manning succumbing to Superbowl Hangover. Buyer beware here if he lands on Madden '08.
2. Drew Brees - Brees became a storm last season. This is the guy who will come out of nowhere with a 35 point game one week.
3. Carson Palmer - Cincy has done some work on their O-line. As a Steelers fan, I hate that, but as a potential Palmer owner, I can't help but feel better.
4. Tom Brady (Previously 5) - You would think that Brady signed up to do a MTV show entitled 'Pimp my Receiving Corps': Stallworth, Washington, and Welker will be scoring (as opposed to dropping) touchdowns all year long.
5. Michael Vick (Previously 4) - Petrino has given Vick a very pronounced nod of confidence by trading Schaub. But can Vick take advantage of all his new responsibilities?
6. Donovan McNabb (Previously 7) - Bulger's loss is McNabb's gain: Kevin Curtis will be catching long bombs with a pair of wings on his helmet.
7. Marc Bulger (Previously 6) - Only moved down because of buzz around McNabb; Bulger should technically be #6b.
8. Matt Leinhart - The Cards defense is getting better, so Linehart won't play from behind nearly as much this season. This sounds like bad news in fantasy terms, but will actually decrease his INT numbers when he won't try and force as many passes.
9. Vince Young - I am screaming at the top of my lungs for the Titans to pick up at least one reciever in free agency. However, the Tennessee brass seems to be pretty good at drafting rookies who are ready to play. Meachem, Ginn, Jarrett in the first round?
10. Ben Roethlisberger - I almost put Tony Romo or Eli Manning here. Then my bias kicked in. Big Ben is barely holding on to number ten, because of coaching switches. There's a risk factor here.

Mid Round Flier Special: Matt Schaub - Yes, Schaub is playing behind the dreaded Houston O-line, but people love this kid. Draft him as a QB2, and you may have a starter or massive trade bait on your hands.

Running Back
1. LaDanian Tomlinson - Come to think of it, you should probably skip #1 whenever you look at the RB section. Everyone knows who it'll be.
2. Larry Johnson - With Huard at the Helm, the offense shouldn't stall like it did in the Wild Card game against Indy. Here's hoping KC drafts a recieving threat downfield to take the heat off LJ.
3. Steven Jackson - Faulk is out of the picture, and SJ is poised to become #2b on my draft board.
4. Frank Gore - Gore was relatively injury-free last year. You can't pass up on him at this point, as he is a dying breed; Each season, less and less workhorse backs stay that way.
5. Brian Westbrook - I love the Kevin Curtis signing. It takes a lot less pressure off of Westy.
6. Rudi Johnson - The man is a consistency king. He is the safest buy other than LDT.
7. Willie Parker - He's a workhorse back, but O-line questions need to be answered in Pittsburgh. Otherwise, we might have another Edge James on our hands.
8. Shaun Alexander - Alexander's fate is linked to that of Hasslebeck. He could slip down the rankings.
9. Willis McGahee - McGahee could move up if the Ravens get another downfield threat, and if Ogden stays on board.
10. Maurice Jones-Drew - Here's to hoping Fragile Freddy starts to sit early in the season.

Mid Round Flier Special - Carnell Williams - Caddy burned alot of us last year, as he was previously ranked as a first round pick. Well, the Tampa O-line is being restructured, and Gruden seems to have more quarterbacks than he needs this season. If Calvin Johnson suits up for the Bucs this season, Williams should have a bounceback year.

Wide Reciever
1. Marvin Harrison - Harrison may get a few touchdowns less than T.O., and recieve a few yards short of C.J., but this guy is a guaranteed WR1 every year. You can't pass up on him.
2. Chad Johnson - Ocho-Cinco loves to get the ball. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and Johnson's tendency to demand looks is an invaluable quality in terms of fantasy football.
3. Larry Fitzgerald - The Cardinals are a team on the rise, which can only mean good things for LFtiz's stats.
4. Steve Smith - Carolina is giving Delhomme a nod of confidence. If that isn't a good sign for Smith's #s, I don't know what is.
5. Reggie Wayne - If you have Harrison and Wayne as your WR1 and WR2, you are set (with the exception of their bye week) for the season.
6. Terrell Owens - Hate the guy, love his production. To some owners, he is worth the headache.
7. Javon Walker - Walker will clearly be the best recieving threat on the field with Rod Smith taking a smaller role in the offense.
8. Roy Williams - Kevin Curtis signed with Philly, and as long as Millen doesnt take Calvin Johnson with the #2, Williams' production should only increase.
9. Anquan Boldin - Boldin is likely to slip down the draft board with his failure to meet standards last season. Bargain alert.
10. T.J. Houshmanzadeh - Is it wrong to hope Chris Henry keeps getting arrested? Only if you're not a Houshmanzadeh owner.

Mid Round Flier Special - Kevin Curtis - Curtis has all the variables in place to blow people away this season. Anyone can look good catching passes from McNabb, so look for him to at least emerge as a strong WR2.

Houston's Clearing House

Shortly after the Matt Schaub trade, houston released both Quarterback David Carr, and RB Domanic Williams (Formerly Davis). It looks like Houston is completely trying to change the image of their team offensively.

Will this make Houston a contender? Anything's possible in today's NFL. Here's the first of many Offensive Inventory Reports i'll conduct during the offseason.

Quarterback - Matt Schaub - Grade: B
Schaub is definitely an upgrade for the Texans, who clearly had enough with former No. 1 pick Carr. However, he may not show dramatic improvement right away. many people forget that he's only started two games, and that causes many skeptics to claim Schaub's skills have wilted in Michael Vick's shadow. Whether this is true or not, Houston now had a new face of the franchise who has proven potential.

Running Back - Ahman Green - Grade: C
While a grade of C seems a little harsh, keep in mind I have factored in Green's long-term value. He's getting older, and his injury history is alot longer than you'd like your featured back's to be. While he IS an immediate upgrade from the kooky running back rotation of 2006, the Texans should groom a young back during this period rather than be dependent on banged up veterans in the future.

Backup Running Back - Ron Dayne - Grade: B+
He's no Michael Turner, but Dayne is at his best when he is spelling another back. His hard-nosed running style flattens tired out defenses. While the former Heisman Trophy winner has been classified as a dissapointment in the NFL, he does rather well here. Keep in mind it was Dayne who led the Texans to their first franchise victory against Superbowl XLI winner Indianapolis.

Wide Receiver 1 - Andre Johnson - Grade: A-
Johnson is actually very good. He led the league in receptions last year, and would no doubt be in the elite tier of wideouts if another offensive threat accompanied him on the field. This threat could be Green, but the Texans really need to get someone worthy of attention to replace Eric Moulds. With a good WR 2, and a Settled-in Schaub, Andre could be the star he's always supposed to have been.

Wide Receiver 2 - ?????? - Grade: F
Here's where I get my credibility back. Yes, it seems I have been awfully kind to the Houston Offense, but I draw the line at Wide Reciever 2. As far as I know, the holder of this position has yet to be determined. I would suggest that Houston looks to the draft, but let's face it, they have way too many needs elsewhere, and will possibly have a position battle between Kevin Walter and David Anderson. Either this is the case, or Houston's replacement at WR2 is SO under the radar that it is a bad sign in itself.

Tight End - Owen Daniels - Grade: B-
For awhile there, Daniels looked pretty damn good for a rookie Tight End. He seems to fit well in Kubiak's system, but one has to wonder how his adjustment to a new QB will go. He did emerge as a viable red-zone target last season, so when the Texans actually get into the Red Zone, his value increases.

Offensive Line - In Progress - Grade: D-
Every Mock Draft I have read has the Texans taking Penn Stater (We Are!) Levi Brown. There's a reason for that. Houston has, by far, the most needs in their offensive line, which was so pourous that it knocked David Carr out of a job. If the Texans want Schaub to Blossom, they have to pull this line together and draft well.

Schaub-shank Redemption

I was offically announced earlier today that the starting Quarterback for the Texans will be hailed ex-Falcon Matt Schaub. The Texans bagged the Atlanta backup for a flip-flop in the first round draft order (The Falcons will be at 8, and the Texans at 10), and secound round picks in 2007 and 2008. The move seems to be a popular one, as most analysts believe that the only reason Schaub hasn't been a starting quarterback in the league is because of Atlanta's commitment to Michael Vick. Well, popular if you exclude the opinion David Carr.

Carr, who has taken almost 250 sacks behing the infamously penetrable Texans O-line, is suddenly out of a job. Possible relocations include Oakland, Miami, and Minnesota. Carr, a number one pick overall, has taken insult in addition to injury during his five years in Houston, with many saying that he is to blame for the franchise's unimpressive record. While Carr has shown flashes of greatness, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns last year. You know your situation is pretty bad when you're benched in favor of Sage Rosenfels.

But the real story here is if the Texans' role as the AFC south's whipping boy will endure. They have a great playmaker in Andre Johnson, a new (only to them, Ahman Green is getting up in years) halfback, and now a fresh start with Schaub. With some work on the O-line (Penn State's Levi Brown in the draft, anyone?), this may not look like the offensive abomination we've come to expect. Who knows! Maybe Mario Williams will prove he was worthy of the number one overall pick! Maybe Big Daddy Dayne will continue his hot streak that started at the end of the season! The important thing is, the Texans are getting the overhaul Coach Gary Kubiak needs. If Schaub is as good as everyone says he is, the Texans won't become a sensation overnight, but they'll certainly give some more established teams a run for their money.

Top Ten Fantasy: Issue 2

Even before the free agency period is over, some adjustments need to be made to my recomendations for fantasy drafts. Things are getting interesting - major changes are in bold.

Quarterback
1. Peyton Manning - The only threat here is if he lands on the cover of Madden '08. Even so, if anyone could beat the curse, it would be Peyton.
2. Drew Brees - Sure, Joe Horn is with the Falcons now, but Brees has got the O-line and offensive talent to wow us again this coming season,
3. Carson Palmer - The Cincy arrest rate seems to be slowing. Either that, or I've stopped caring. Palmer will deliver.
4. Michael Vick - Petrino is a magician when it comes to quarterbacks, and Joe Horn can't hurt Vick's production.
5. Tom Brady - Randy Moss trade rumors, Wes Welker in the receiving corps and Gisele Bunchden may be pregnant, oh my!
6. Marc Bulger (Previously 7) - So now he's throwing to Touchdown Torry, Old man Bruce, and Drew Bennett? Bulger will be throwing the ball far and often. Rams fans should be giddy.
7. Donovan McNabb (Previously 9) - The Birds let Garcia spread his wings and migrate south. If that isn't a early nod of confidence to number five, I don't know what is. Here's to hoping he stays McHealthy for a McWhole McSeason.
8. Matt Leinhart (Previously 6)- The former USC star's stock only falls because of free agency moves. The Cards kicked underachieving tackle Davis off the roster, but really should pick someone new up.
9. Vince Young (Previously 8)- Hopefully Young won't be forced into a Tom Brady situation and have to make ends meet with receivers off the street. Young could hurdle Linehart for number 8 if Ted Ginn Jr. gets scooped up by the Titans.
10. Ben Roethlisberger - Still alot of questions, call me biased, but I like Big Ben at Ten.

Mid Round Flier Special: Jeff Garcia - There is a very good chance the newly signed former probowl quarterback will win the starting job in Offensive Guru Gruden's potentially high-octane offense. With grumblings of Calvin Johnson lasting until pick number four, you can't help but love the guy's upside.

Running Back
1. LaDanian Tomlinson - The only threat to LDT being dethroned was the rumored departure of offensive lineman Dielman. He stayed. But even if he didn't, would you pass up on Tomlinson? I didn't think so.
2. Larry Johnson - LJ is a buyer beware situation. He carried the ball a record number of times, and could be due for an off year. I know, that's blasphemy. I take it back.
3. Steven Jackson (Previously 4) - With more distractions downfield, SJ is poised to be launched into the elite level. Let's face it, Faulk isn't coming back, and workhorse backs like Jackson are becoming a select group. Snatch him up.
4. Frank Gore (Previously 3) - Gore takes a hit with Norv Turner's departure. I just don't get it. When will people learn he isn't meant to head coach? Gore will continue to pound the ball regardless.
5. Brian Westbrook (Previously 8) - With McNabb's Rehab going swimmingly, and one of the best offensive lines in the NFC in front of him, you can't let Westbrook slip into the second round.
6. Rudi Johnson - Rudi! Rudi! Rudi!
7. Willie Parker - The Steelers passed on brining in a power back to share time. A victory for fantasy players everywhere.
8. Shaun Alexander (Previously 5) - Yes, this seems arbitrary, but let's face it: Seattle's offensive line isn't getting any better. After the failed Dielmann deal and the looming departure of Porkchop Womack, it looks like Alexander will have his work cut out with him.
9. Willis McGahee (Previously Unranked) - With Jamal getting cozy in Ohio, the Ravens moved on quickly. McGahee played well with a mediocre line and inconsistent quarterback. Just imagine him killing the clock in purple.
10. Maurice Jones-Drew (Previously 9)- When the Jags signed Fred Taylor to a contract extension, a distant set of knocks was heard in the distance. It was the sound of thousands of fantasy football fans htting their heads on their desks over and over.

Mid Round Flier Special - LenDale White - With Travis Henry in Denver, and Chris Brown being shopped around to various teams, you have to wonder who the Titans will have in the backfield. Who else but last years second round pick?

Wide Reciever
1. Marvin Harrison - The same goes with Harrison - if Peyton graces the cover of everyone's favorite football video game (ok, some of us like 2k5, but that's besides the point) - you may have to worry. He's still elite.
2. Chad Johnson - Let's hope he starts scoring quicker next season. Even if he doesnt, he'll still be invaluable in the fantasy postseason.
3. Larry Fitzgerald - Ken Wisenhunt + Best Recieving Duo in the NFC = Love.
4. Steve Smith - Remember the old Steve Smith? The one from '05. Just got a text from him - he's back.
5. Reggie Wayne - Need I repeat myself?
6. Terrell Owens - Jones is giving him the nod of confidence. Your call, Jerry.
7. Javon Walker - Fake handoffs to Henry countered with a reverse by walker are a recurring dream.
8. Roy Williams - The rumored arrival of Kevin Curtis may or may not help him.
9. Anquan Boldin - Seriously, I'd draft him on account of the fact that he as a cool first name alone.
10. T.J. Houshmanzadeh - Remember when everyone was worried about Chad Johnson? They have two reasons to worry now.

Mid Round Flier Special - Randy Moss - If he gets traded to the Packers or Patriots, he may not even last until the mid rounds. Oh, the possibilites!

'Poz I Said So

I'm not quite sure what I would do if the Steelers use the number 15 pick overall to select Penn State Linebacker Paul Posluszny as their first round draft choice. I would have to change pants, at least, because I would wet them in joy.

It was regrettable to see Joey Porter get cut, and insult to injury when he landed $20 million guaranteed by signing with the Dolphins. But landing Happy Valley's tackle machine - that would make it all worth it.

Joey Porter - who was supposedly cut for financial reasons - made his bed. And now he'll lie in it. (The bed is made of money, and located in Miami) Though he was a victim of the salary cap, the fact that he had to be talked out of a holdout during last season's training camp, and drew several unsportsmanlike conduct penalties didn't help his case to stay with the black and Gold.

Enter Posluszny - a product of Penn State (Bias alert), where players don't even have their names on their jerseys. That's where you'll get your character guys. Plus, where better to get your new linebacker but from "Linebacker U"?

Poz, as he is casually referred to, is, in short, the shit. A winner of both the Bednarik and Butkus awards, he made over 375 tackles during his collegiate career. Jack Ham called him the greatest linebacker to ever play at Penn State.

Porter's departure leaves a noticeable hole in a once universally feared defense. If Posluszny falls to 15, the Steelers have to take him.

The Patriots are Looking Scary

Remember the Patriots? They looked like they were in troubled waters at the beginning of last season. They lost former Superbowl MVP reciever Deion Branch because of his contract holdout, and it looked like the dynasty that terrorized the AFC east was over. Then again, that was back when the Dolphins were a trendy Superbowl pick.

The Patriots looked weak. But they were only one game away from a 4th superbowl. Now, they are joined by Adalius Thomas, who has been hailed as the most versatile defensive player in the league.

The next free agent move is an attempt to acquire reciever Wes Welker from the dolphins. If you're not a Pats fan, things aren't looking good. Chances are, if the Patriots had just one of these players last season they would have made it to the big game.

Barring any key injuries, the Patriots are going to have a great chance at being Superbowl champions in '08.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life for Jeff

If you ask me, the Buccaneers dodged a bullet when Jake Plummer decided to retire rather than challenge Chris Simms for the starting job in Tampa Bay.

The Bucs are now reportedly saddled with Philadelphia comeback sensation Jeff Garcia, who was rumored to go to the Oakland Raiders for this season. This is great news for both teams, as Garcia is coming of a high note in his once wilting career (almost leading the suprise division-champ Eagles to the NFC championship), and the Raiders would present the 37-year old former Pro Bowl Quarterback a myriad of problems.

Garcia is an emotional player, and the hunger he still has from his 6-2 run with the Eagles will make him a fierce competitor in Tampa Bay. The good news is, this is a win-win situation for the Bucs. Garcia will either push Chris Simms to his potential in training camp, making the young quarterback the franchise player he was always supposed to be, or he will be a great short-term solution for the Buccaneers by taking the reigns himself. If the former occurs, the Bucs will have both a great starting quarterback and a great backup.

With a rejuvenated offensive line and the possible acquisition of Calvin Johnson in the draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be a force to be reckoned with...

Salary Cap Casualty: Brandon Stokely

Stokley, who was part of the feared Indy recieving triumvirate, was cut due to financial reasons today. Stokely was a victim of the injury bug, playing only four games this past season.

Re-Jake-ted

That's right, moments after Rumors about Jake Plummer going to the Buccaneers surfaced, the former Broncos QB announced his retirement.

Plummer, who was benched in favor of Rookie Jay Cutler from Vanderbuilt last season, was most likely going to be reunited with Houston Head coach Gary Kubiak in free agency. Instead, Plummer looked as if he was heading to Tampa Bay, and decided to end his NFL career with 161 touchdowns and 161 interceptions.

I was never a huge fan of "Jake the Snake", but I did like the idea of him being used as a fire under Houston Quarterback David Carr. Unless Plummer pulls a Junior Seau, every other free agent quarterback's stock just jumped up a few notches.

Brye, Brye, Bry-ant

With the 49ers choosing to waive troubled Wide Reciever Antonio Bryant, I got 10% of my wishes for the Free Agency Period granted. Not a bad start.

Bryant was cut after his behavioral issues (including a 4 game suspension for violating the leagues' substance abuse policy) outweighed his slightly above average performance on the field.

I love this move. The 49ers are steadily rebuilding, and should try their hand at free agency for a instant improvement (trust me, there are guys out there), and draft a wide reciever or two in the later rounds. You have no idea who will be the next Marques Colston.

This is the third team that has given up on Bratty Bryant, so it's great to see that Football Players still are (somewhat) responsible for their actions. If the other 29 teams in the league are smart enough to not even bother with you, Antonio, I hear that McDonalds is now looking for part-time and full time cashiers.

Salary Cap Casualty: Joe Horn

This one I'm not so upset about. Joe Horn was offered a pay cut, but declined.

Salary Cap Casualty: Joey Porter

I am beside myself. The Steelers cut ROLB Joey Porter today. His sacks are fourth in team history.

Free Agent Friday - 5 Things I Wouldn't Like To See

At 12:01 PM tonight (or tomorrow morning), Sports Agents across the nation will be on their cell phones. Free Agent Friday is less than one day away, and speculation continues.

Five Things I WOULDN'T Like To See:

5. Jeff Garcia to signing with the Raiders. When Garcia left the 49ers after three pro bowl seasons to try his luck with the Browns, and then the Lions, many simply attributed his failure to age. This past season with the Eagles, he showed everyone he's still got it. Though there is almost no chance he'll remain in Philly, he should know that he has to go to a team that has a chance of at least going .500 if his career will continue.

4. Willis McGahee gets traded to the New York Giants. McGahee has only one year left on his contract with the Buffalo Bills, so they can't get much more than a 3rd round draft pick for the (still) dynamic back. The Bills don't have too much in the backfield besides Willis, and his displacement would severely hurt Brandon Jacob's chances as being the main back in New York.

3. Donte Stallworth goes to the Patriots. Yes, they need wide recievers, but Stallworth isn't the best answer. The injury-prone deep threat could be dangerous when paired with Tom Brady, but is best suited to a team with great WR depth simply because he gets hurt so much. If the Patriots blow a hefty amount on Stallworth, chances are he will be a duct-tape solution. Let's hope Stallworth sticks with the Birds.

2. Antonio Bryant stays with the 49ers. I get the feeling Bryant was supposed to be T.O. 2.0 with San Fransisco. He hasn't panned out. Alex Smith is becoming a better NFL Quarterback and needs a viable number one reciever. Bryant would be better suited as a faux #1, not unlike Deion Branch.

1. Jamal Lewis re-signs after being cut by the Ravens. Yes, I love to have things shaken up, especially amidst the typically bland offseason news, but backup Mike Anderson is the real deal. Shannahan breeds explosive running backs, and Anderson could be fantasy gold.

Free Agent Friday - 5 Things I Would Like To See

Friday, March 2nd will be the start of the Free Agency Period. The transactions that occur will play a key role in shaping the draft, and lay the foundation for new tandems for the highlight reel. Here are 5 things I wouldn't mind reading on the sports ticker:

5. Matt Schaub is traded to be a viable starter. The '06 season was riddled with Schaub chatter. Vick completely fell apart after his impressive streak of touchdowns through the air, and went back to his own 'I will win the game myself' strategy. We saw the results. Almost every single analyst loves Matt Schaub. It's time to see what he can do, and with the possibility of him playing in Minnesota, how can one not want this to happen?

4. Randy Moss gets traded. Yes, yes, I know this could be regrettable, considering I've thought about the possibility of 84-yard touchdown passes floating into Moss' outstreched arms via JaMarcus Russell, but I am not quite sure Randy will ever play like everyone wants him to in Oakland. The mumurs of Moss becoming a compliment to Donald Driver is enough to make any fantasy football fan freak out. I'm starting to hear "FARVE....TO MOSS!" in my head...if only...

3. Michael Turner gets a chance to be the workhorse. Turner, who probably won't stick around in San Diego, has a monstorous 6.28 YPC average this past season. Of course, "The Burner" was often used as a changeup after defenses were beaten senseless by LaDanian Tomlinson, so this number should be high. I am an advocate of great backups like Turner (and NYG's Brandon Jacobs) being given the chance to take the reigns as every-down backs, so his signing with a team such as The New York Jets would be an early birthday present.

2. T.O. gets cut by the Cowboys. Given that Jerry Jones has expressed he wants Terrell "I am allowed to bitch at everyone even though I drop every third ball thrown to me" Owens back, this is a stretch. But, Owens is owed a $5 million bonus this season, and given the fact that he has had yet another operation on his finger (which is kind of important when your career involves catching things), it wouldn't be out of the blue. Still, this is a list of things i'd LIKE to see, and not what will likely happen.

1. The Steelers snag Cato June. Yes, it is very biased for the Steelers fan to put his interests first, but the boys in black and gold need a good OLB. June will add leadership and make plays to a team that needed both last year.

The Eagles are Hunt-ing for A Power Back

The Eagles had one of the most suprising seasons in team history this year, carrying on to the Divisonal round of the playoffs when it looked like they didn't have a chance of even making them back in October. They fell to the saints' potent rushing attack.

This caused many fans to wonder why the team with Brian Westbrook wasn't the one wowing with big runs. It's simple. The league has made a two-headed rushing system the norm. Workhorses like LaDanian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson are a rare breed. Sure, the Eagles' run defense wasn't the best, but the reason why the Saints did so well on the ground is they could mix it up; McAllister pounding it up the middle, and Reggie bush running circles around the line.

Some may be saying, we have Correll Buckhalter! Buck is back! We have such an attack! It was a nice little storybook turn for a little while; after two years of struggling, Buckhalter finally saddled up and pounded the ball. The fumbles, however, got old. He's not a spectacular power back, and is a free agent this year.

That's why I think the Eagles should draft Penn State's Tony Hunt. The Senior Bowl MVP is a strong-willed, north-south runner that would be a perfect compliment to Westbrook. Plus, a good amount of Penn State fans are also Eagles fans. I can see thousands upon thousands of green and white Hunt Jerseys being sold.

Please. Please. Kick Buckhalter to the curb and get another viable rushing threat on the field.

Fed-rExed?

Could the Bears be sending Rex Grossman to another team? Though there isn't much talk about it, a move would make sense. Grossman has one year left on his contract and no guarantee of an extension after schotty play in the last quarter of Superbowl XLI. Plus, Chicago fans of 'Sexy Rexy' seem to be in the minority.

Fans have been calling for Greise to start since the preseason. Chicago could draft a young quarterback like Michigan State's Drew Stanton (it's not like they need to draft anyone on defense right away) in the first round, and have Griese ride the defense to another NFC North title. If Grossman has a future in this league, the best way to establish it is with a fresh start.

There are alot of places Rex could go. Those four spectacular 100+ QB rating games this season could be attractive to teams struggling with regularly medicore Quarterbacks like Houston and Cleveland. The upside to Grossman is they could probably get him relatively cheap when compared to more sought-after posibilities like Matt Schaub and Jake Plummer. We'll have to see what develops.

Top Ten Fantasy: Issue 1

It's a little early to be making predictions for the '07 NFL Fantasy season, but here is my first crack at the top tens for each of the main skill positions.

Quarterback
1. Peyton Manning - Is there really any argument here? The man just produces.
2. Drew Brees - Number 9 turns any receiving core into an elite force. Whether Joe Horn's healthy or not, he will produce next year.
3. Carson Palmer - '06 was a dissapointment for both Palmer owners and Bengals fans, but if the offensive line stays in sync, this Quarterback will resume his old ways.
4. Michael Vick - Yeah, a suprise at number 4, but in most leagues his rushing yards are a nice added bonus.
5. Tom Brady - Brady had an up and down season this past year, but that hardly changes anything. He'll move up the charts if New England gets some better recievers (Reche Caldwell, I'm looking at you.)
6. Matt Leinhart - Yes, Matt "I dated Paris Hilton" Leinhart. With Wisenhunt and Grimm in Arizona, I expect the Cards to be an offensive powerhouse. Either that, or I'll start yelling "THEY WERE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE."
7. Marc Bulger - If you cut out the last third of the season, Bulger was spectacular. Blame his crappy last few weeks on the o-line (or lack thereof). His long streak of touchdowns with no interceptions shows that he's still got it.
8. Vince Young - If you look at his stats for '06, he appears to be nothing more than an unpolished rookie. Look for this to change next season. Again, his standing is lifted by the rushing QB bonus.
9. Donovan McNabb - Mr. 'McNabbulous' would be higher in my top ten if he didn't have the scary off-season rehab situation. This is a high risk- high reward situation. If he comes back like he did in '06, you've got a great season. Otherwise, I have two words for you; Daunte Culpepper.
10. Ben Roethlisberger - Again, he would be higher if there weren't so many questions. Tomlin's impact will be a huge factor. Either way, he's fitting at number 10 because even without the questions, Big Ben was not a consistent fantasy dynamo.

Mid Round Flier Special: Jay Cutler. Denver's first round draft pick wasn't exceptional, but is the best raw talent of the '06 draft class quarterbacks. Give him a shot.

Running Back
1. LaDanian Tomlinson - Phillip Rivers can only improve, and with the young QB's up and down performances, LDT remained consistent in his full-blown awesomeness. It'll be hard to top '06, but if anyone can, Tomlinson is the man.
2. Larry Johnson - Kansas City was not itself in the playoffs. Herm Edwards will iron out the kinks, and everyone's favorite hair-tackler will be rushing for 100 yard games again.
3. Frank Gore - Perhaps it's a leap of faith to rank him number three, but I think Gore has conquered his fumblitis. Reminds me of another dynamic running back people started to doubt after a fumble prone season or two...his name rhymes with Smiki Smarber...
4. Steven Jackson - This guy does it all. With Orlando Pace healthy, Jackson is poised for a scoring spree.
5. Shaun Alexander - Remember him? Unhampered by the Madden curse, he'll go back to producing. He did show some signs of life towards the end of the season despite his age, so I'm saying he's a safe buy.
6. Rudi Johnson - His middle name must be consistency. 'Nuff said.
7. Willie Parker - Another Steeler I'd love to rank higher, but there are too many unanswered questions. Parker had a breakout season in '06 and definitely deserves to be in the top tier.
8. Brian Westbrook - A physical freak that continues to be a fantasy dream. Injury issues are a headache, and his fantasy fate depends on those of Garcia and McNabb, unfortunately.
9. Maurice Jones-Drew - The guy rushes better than Donald Trump insults people. Fragile Freddy is bound to take a back seat in the offense, leaving the UCLA grad room to run.
10. Brandon Jacobs - I get scared watching him on TV, I can't imagine what it would be like to try and tackle this behemoth. He's bound to drop a few pegs if NY brings another back into the mix.

Mid Round Flier Special - LaMont Jordan. Depending who is Quarterback in Oakland, Jordan can go back to the days when he had 80+ receptions in a season. Think Jamal Lewis-style bounce back year.

Wide Reciever
1. Marvin Harrison - Harrison is a fantasy owner's dream - No headaches, all production. Almost a guaranteed solid season.
2. Chad Johnson - Johnson produces when it counts - down the stretch and through the fantasy postseason.
3. Larry Fitzgerald - Hampered by health issues in '06, Fitz caught the eye of QB Leinhart. Their chemistry will be a beautiful thing.
4. Steve Smith - Normally he'd be #1 or #2, but there is still some doubt surrounding Panthers QB Delhomme. Plus, we all saw what happened to Smith's production when Weinke had to fill in...
5. Reggie Wayne - Either Harrison has a good game, Wayne has a good game, or both do. There aren't many exceptions.
6. Terrell Owens - He's been dropping alot of balls, but he's the best YAC guy in the league. Buyer beware.
7. Javon Walker - Walker fits in nicely with Shannahan's offense. Plus, his tendency to generate big plays is downright euphoric.
8. Roy Williams - He fizzled down the stretch, but as long as Millen doesn't screw up yet another draft, look for his production to increase.
9. Anquan Boldin - Boldin should actually be higher, but WR3 Bryant Johnson takes too many balls away from the Cards' #2.
10. T.J. Houshmanzadeh - The perfect complement to Johnson. Chris Henry takes away too many scores for him to be in the top 7.

Mid Round Flier Special - Donte Stallworth. The first few weeks of the Eagles '06 season, he and McNabb looked like the Dynamic Duo. Hopefully they will both avoid the injury bug next season.

Conversely, Chris Henry is a Dumbshit

Bengals WR Chris Henry has outdone himself. The troubled player who has had his fair share of run-ins with the law continued the ongoing saga of illegality with his most recent arrest today. According to the Associated Press, Henry was sentenced to 90 days in jail for serving alcohol to three minors in his hotel room last spring.

At first I kind of passed over this story, but then thought. Why is Chris Henry partying with three minors when he could be hitting the town? Turns out, the three minors were girls of the ages 15, 16, 18.

I'm guessing the gals weren't over to watch a new episode of the O.C. Let's think...why would you want to give booze to underage girls?

Is Chris Henry lonely? Looking for some young love? Well, Chris, Here's a (legal) solution. I saw it while watching late night tv. It's called 1-800-SHO-GIRL.

That's right Chris, these girls are legal, and just a phone call away!

Hank Baskett is the Future

I knew I liked Eagles Wide Receiver Hank Baskett, but I didn't have a precise reason until I read this:

"Who Knew? Undrafted rookie Hank Baskett (Eagles) had the longest touchdown catch (89 yards) and highest average reception (21.1 yards) of any NFL player." (http://www.benmaller.com/nfl_rumors_notes)

That's right. Of ANY NFL PLAYER. The best part about this is, if you're not a Birds fan, there's a good chance you know little of anything about this guy. Despite the fact he had the highest average reception this year, he is almost completely under the radar. Baskett is a big, physical reciever that could eventually be the biggest fear of secondaries across the league.

The Eagles are set in the recieving department, whether things work out with Donte Stallworth or not. In addition to Baskett, Reggie Brown looks great. But Hank Baskett, he's the one to watch.

Vick Stays

As reported by foxsports.com, Michael Vick is the uncontested starter at Quarterback for the Falcons in 2007:

"There are no plans to trade him or cut him. Michael is our quarterback and the leader of our team. We have a new head coach )Bobby Petrino) who is anxious to start working with him. Everyone has high expectations of him going into next season. Michael has those too," Kim Shreckengost, executive vice president of the Arthur M. Blank Group told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution." (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6395878)

So much for Vick in black and silver. Man, I want someone to shake up the draft before it actually happens.

Good News - I Can Be a Head Coach in 13 years!

That's right, because the age standard has been lowered with the hiring of 31-year-old Lane Kiffin as the Raider's new head coach!

Kiffin, USC's former offensive coordinator, picked up the gig after co-worker Sarkisian decided to stay with the Trojans. The important thing is it shows Al Davis is trying every angle he can to get the respect of his players - the return of the disciplinarian didn't work (Sorry Art Shell), so he's bringing in the hip, cool, young guy on the rise. Kind of like the fresh-faced youth ministers who try to tell teenagers that "Jesus is Dope Fly, just like you kids!"

I haven't made my mind up on this one. At first it seems like an easy move to criticize, as Kiffin has only one year of experience as an assistant coach in the NFL, but given the lack of quality coaches when compared to the staggering number of vacancies, why not give somebody new a shot? It will be interesting to see where this goes.

T.O. Continues to Put His Foot in His Mouth

Not even 24 hours after Bill Parcell's retirement, Terrell Owens reportedly insinuated that the former Dallas Cowboy's coach's retirement would be good for the team.

"I am just hoping his retirement brings promise to what the team has to offer," Owens said. "This past year was a big letdown. On paper we were as good as anybody we played against every week. The end result didn't show that. Our play was not indicative of what we could have done. What we should have done. Hopefully, the owner will hire a coach to take the team to the next level." (From foxsports.com)

Wow, is it just me, or could T.O. play Andy Bernard (Ed Helm's character) from The Office? Parcells is out, you are in. SHUT UP. It's only a matter of time that we hear Owens talking about how the Tuna "Schruted" the season.

Owen's constant need to be heard keeps hurting him professionally. He's one of the best YAC recievers in the league, but does two awful things to negate that: A) Drops the occasional pass, and B) Has to make a stirr about every little event. If he did one, he could probably get away with it. But seriously, Terrell, shut up if you don't want your career stunted.

My Movie Pitch

Suddenly, the subgenre of Football-meets-prison movies has emerged upon the hollywood scene. Don't know what I'm walking about? Here's some refreshers:

So, it's not hard to argue that this type of movie has been done. Think about it though, in both cases the inmates were criminals turned into football players. Who has done a feature about football players who get locked up for criminal activity? That's right. No one. Until now.

Picture this: You take every Cincinatti Bengal who has been arrested in the past two seasons, and put them all in the same correctional facility. And film it. It'll be like Inside the NFL meets Oz! You've got big names here; LB Odell Thurman, WR Chris Henry, and most recently, CB Johnathan 'Dude, Where's my Car?' Joseph. Think of all the subplots! Who will make the best shiv? Will there be a shower rape love triangle?

The best part of this is, not only will it provide for entertainment, but it will show that Coach Marvin Lewis is serious about discipline and teamwork. Discipline, buying bitches with cigarrettes, and teamwork.

Talk about Diversity in Coaching Crap Continues

Just when I thought it couldn't get worse.

Yes, yes, it is historic that this is the first Super Bowl in history in which both head coaches are African-American. Great strides, yadda yadda yadda.

But now with the Tomlin hire, the talk is perpetuated. Dan Rooney established the minority candidate rule in interviewing head coaches, and just happened to hire a black coach. Insert racial subplot here. But doesn't that take away from Tomlin's acheivement? The guy wasn't hired to be the first black coach in Steelers Franchise history. He was hired because he was a young coach on the rise, not unlike Cowher. STOP STRESSING THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN.

Ironically, the fact that the media keeps harping on this "evidence of progress in race relations" in sports is proof that we haven't come that far at all. We're still seperating black coaches from white coaches. We're looking for a quota to fill. As soon as we don't look at the coaches, the owners, and the players as races, and regard them as professionals, we are THEN working towards equality. Just SHUT UP with the racial subplots, PLEASE.

Coverboy Peyton

I'm going to put this out there right now. Prediction:

Peyton Manning = Madden '08/ NFL '08 / Whatever The Hell They Want To Call it '08 Cover

Barring an absolutely disgusting performance in Superbowl XLI, I find this indispuatable.

Think about it. Not only does Peyton have the marketability they are looking for, but the only excuse he hasn't graced the cover of this video game dynasty is because he hasn't won when it counted. Now he has. Shaun Alexander didn't have to win the Superbowl to get the cover last year, and Peyton has gotten as far as he needs to to get it this year.

What about LaDanian Tomlinson, you ask? It's a safe prediction, but I don't think LDT is widely known enough to beat out Peyton. Yes, yes, I know he recently shattered the single-season scoring record and rushing TD record, but his quiet demeanor (which I love, I can't imagine how that guy can be so humble) hurts him. LDT isn't doing cell phone and credit card commercials. Peyton's already out there. He's been selling things for years. If it were anyone else against LDT, I might sway in the Supercharger's direction, but I just think it's Peyton's year.

Vick to Raiders?

I read Ben Maller's Rumors and Notes on almost a daily basis, not just because I like watching trade scenarios play out, but to toy with what sometimes seem like improbable scenarios. It was like christmas came early (or late), when I saw this little nugget:

"The Oakland Raiders are preparing to make a run at Falcons QB Michael Vick, according to NFL sources. The Raiders package would include receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter plus the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 draft for Vick and the Falcons first round pick (10th overall)."
Posted January 22, by Ben Maller (http://www.benmaller.com/nfl_rumors_notes)

Can you picture this?! Whether you think the whole 'Outlaw looking for success with the team of misfits' is cliche at this point or not, I can't help but love this scenario. Bottom line, the Falcons have two quarterbacks that want to start. The raiders have two quarterbacks that don't deserve to start. Vick leaves, Schaub starts for the falcons, throwing to two recievers who will (hopefully) have attitude adjustments in a new location. I know I'm not the only one that thinks Moss can play like he did in Minnesota.

On top of all this is the intriguing draft pick situation. I think it's pretty obvious that if the Raiders retain the first pick overall, they'll pick up LSU's JeMarcus Russell or ND's Brady Quinn. Boooorrrrinnngg. Let's give these youngsters a chance to develop, unlike the draft class of '06, who I like to call 'The Draft Class Baptized By Fire". If the raiders get the 10th pick overall there will be less pressure on picking a big name, and they could possibly add some depth at reciever. Also, once the falcons get Moss and Porter, their cheif need (recievers) will no longer be a problem, and they could possibly trade the first pick overall for multiple lower picks. I'm not a Falcons fan, but if they handle this right, they could really benefit.

Also, if the Raiders got Ricky Williams over there, commentators could call them the Doobie Brothers!
